We, participants in the Washington Theological Consortium, are alarmed by the growing weaponization of religion in our time. By this we mean specifically the co-opting of religion by cultural and political movements to carry out agendas that are ethno-centric, messianic, militant, lawless, and/or domineering. Usually, we do not make public statements, but the rate of weaponization of religion has escalated in an alarming way in many parts of the world and in the name of many religions.
As an ecumenical Consortium primarily of Christian theological schools we are most concerned about how the Christian faith is being distorted by certain ethnic, racial, and class interest groups to impose their views on society, both abroad and here at home. …
